Ashes In The Flames

A song inspired by Jan Hus — a preacher and reformer who spoke against corruption in the Church and refused to abandon what he believed to be true unless he could be shown from Scripture that he was wrong. Summoned to the Council of Constance, he was imprisoned, condemned and burned at the stake on July 6, 1415.

The song contains imagery of a “frozen night,” a “winter sky” and “the cold.” Historically, Hus was executed in July, not during winter. These lines are therefore not intended as a literal description of the season, but as poetic imagery — representing the spiritual coldness, isolation, fear and darkness surrounding his final days.

His body was destroyed, but his conviction was not. Ashes in the Flame is about conscience, courage and a faith that refuses to be silenced by power, fear or fire.

Scripture: Acts 5:29; Matthew 10:28; Revelation 2:10

Lyrics

Smoke on the river…
Ash in the sky…
A city whispers secrets
Beneath a frozen night

Candles in the shadows
Truth behind closed doors
A preacher lifts his trembling hands
And heaven shakes the floor

Stone walls hold the silence
Kings whisper in the flame
Gold has bought the sacred halls
But mercy bears no name

A voice walks through the darkness
Not clothed in fear or pride
Speaking fire into broken hearts
Where hungry souls still cry

“If truth must walk through suffering
Then let the heavens see…”

I will stand though kingdoms tremble
I will speak though fires rise high
If my voice must turn to ashes
Let the truth survive!

Through the smoke, beyond the shadows
Through the fear they cannot hide
Though the flame consumes the body
Faith will not die!

The halls were dressed in judgement
Promises wrapped in chains
A man before the mighty
Yet heaven knew his name

They called for fear, for silence
For conscience left behind
But truth stood clothed in weakness
Still brighter than the fire

“What can chains do to a spirit
That belongs to something higher?”

I will stand though kingdoms tremble
I will speak though fires rise high
If my voice must turn to ashes
Let the truth survive!

Through the smoke, beyond the shadows
Through the fear they cannot hide
Though the flame consumes the body
Faith will not die!

Wood beneath my feet…
Smoke before my eyes…
Yet I hear eternity
Breaking through the night

No king can chain conviction
No flame can silence grace
Though the earth may claim the dust
Faith still leaves a trace!

I will stand though kingdoms tremble!
I will sing into the flame!
If my life becomes a witness
Remember my name!

Through the fire, through the sorrow
Through the darkened winter sky
Truth may burn upon the earth
But faith will never die!

Smoke in the silence…
Ash in the dawn…
And somewhere in the cold…
The fire lives on…
