Sovereign Flame

A song about the faith, conviction and human cost of the Crusades. Beneath the crosses and banners were people who marched with hope, fear and devotion — while war left its wounds on every side. The song remembers both the power of belief and the terrible price that can be paid when faith and human conflict become intertwined.

Scripture: Matthew 26:52

Lyrics

Gloria in excelsis Deo
Deus vult, Deus vult
Signum crucis
In nomine Domini

From the fields of Europe
To the dust of the East
They answered a summons
With hope and fear at least
Crosses on their shoulders
Names burned into wood
The road was long and bitter
And not all understood

Torchlight on the road
Dust inside the lungs
Prayers between the banners
Carried on the tongues
Every oath was heavy
Every step a vow
The city on the horizon
Pulled them forward now

Deus vult, in the night
Deus vult, hold the line
By the cross they marched on
Through the smoke and the iron
Deus vult, hear the cry
Deus vult, up so high
For the city in the distance
They kept their fire alive

Richard and Saladin
Locked in history’s frame
At Acre and Antioch
The old walls shook with flame
Steel met steel at dawn
Under desert sun
Victory and ruin
Left both sides undone

Still the bells kept ringing
Far beyond the sea
Mothers and sons were waiting
For what would never be
Faith can move a kingdom
Faith can break a man
History keeps turning
In the dust where they began

Deus vult, in the night
Deus vult, hold the line
By the cross they marched on
Through the smoke and the iron
Deus vult, hear the cry
Deus vult, up so high
For the city in the distance
They kept their fire alive

No song can soften
The cost of every mile
No banner stays unbloodied
No wound stays childlike
Only stone remembers
Only silence stays
And the names keep echoing
Through the chapel haze

Deus vult, in the night
Deus vult, hold the line
By the cross they marched on
Through the smoke and the iron
Deus vult, hear the cry
Deus vult, up so high
For the city in the distance
They kept their fire alive

Gloria in excelsis Deo
In nomine Domini
Signum crucis
Amen, amen
