Wittenberg Hammerfalls

A song inspired by Martin Luther and the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. In 1517, Luther challenged the abuse of indulgences and called the Church back to repentance and the authority of Scripture. His Ninety-Five Theses spread rapidly throughout Europe, and his refusal to abandon his convictions eventually brought him before the Diet of Worms in 1521. Protected at Wartburg Castle, he translated the New Testament into German so that ordinary people could read the Word of God for themselves.

Wittenberg Hammerfalls is about conviction, grace and the courage to stand when religious and political power demand surrender. Its central cry — “Here I Stand” — represents a conscience bound to Scripture and a faith rooted not in human authority, but in the grace of God.

Scripture: Romans 1:16–17; Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 3:28; 2 Timothy 3:16–17

Lyrics

In the candlelight of Wittenberg
The hammer falls… the parchment sings…

In sixteen-seventeen, when the darkness ruled the age
A monk with iron will stepped upon the stage
Disgusted by the greed and the lies that they would sell
He nailed his Ninety-Five upon the chapel door from hell
No more indulgences, no more golden chains
He called the Church to turn or face the coming flames
Martin Luther, with the fire of God in his veins
Defied an empire…
In Jesus’ holy name

Here I Stand!
I will not be moved!
By the Word of God alone, my soul has been renewed!

Here I Stand!
Let the thunder roar!
Grace and faith alone
For Gods glory for ever more!

They summoned him to Worms, tried to make the lion kneel
But he stood before the Emperor, calm as polished steel
“Unless I am convinced by Scripture’s holy light
I cannot and I will not recant, here I stand and fight!”
They burned his books, they hunted him across the land
But the Word of God was spreading fast through the realm
He hid in Wartburg, translated truth for the common man
And the chains of Rome were broken by a single German hand

The old world was dying… a new dawn was born
From the ashes of corruption, a reformation was sworn!

Sola Scriptura!
Sola Fide!
Sola Gratia!

The gates of hell are shaking — can you hear the battle cry?!

Here I Stand!
I will not be moved!
By the Word of God alone, my faith has been approved!
Here I Stand!
Let the heavens roar!
Grace alone, faith alone
I am Yours forevermore!

Here I stand…!
Upon the Rock that never breaks…
Here I stand…!
